Open Up is a workshop for the development of projects for the digital façade in Medialab-Prado's building. This call is addressed to the presentation of proposals to be developed during the workshop-seminar taking place in Madrid from February 9 through 23, 2010.

(*) negot: nada, niente, nothing, rien, nicths; dal latino NEC GUTTA "neanche una goccia".

Our starting point is the design of a vertical garden in a digital format, able to grow “as slowly as a real garden” and to “react” to the contributions of people willing to tend to the garden.

Vision:

Stand By aims to become MediaLab Prado’s “kind” contribution to its immediate urban surroundings without renouncing the Centre’s characteristic “digital, cooperative” style.

We aspire  to occupy the “down times” of the façade programming, far from the Digital Façade’s Prime Time , and propose slow use of Video Wall technology. we will come into action when the façade leaves its frenetic activity aside and goes back to being what it always has been, an unplanned urban façade.

Descripción:

People will interact with / contribute to the garden through:
- a dedicated website
- specific applications on portable devices (smartphones ...)
- a physical installation, located on the nearby square

So we will need to develop:

  • a visualizing application to be projected on the digital façade
  • a web application to store and register user contributions
  • a website
  • ad hoc applications enabling ‘watering’ from portable devices
  • a physical installation enabling “voluntary and explicit” contributions from people on the street. The affordance of such an object will be defined during the workshop according to available technical solutions (Physical computing, Video Tracking ...).

Our initial suggestions include:

  • a cast iron water pump, modified for “virtual watering”
  • a “false shower”, fixed on a public lamppost which would be activated virtually by standing under it in a previously demarcated area.
